On the 18th of September, we, the new volunteers, had our first balloon training. With our amazing trainer Andreea we blew up, twisted, bent, shaped and sometimes also broke balloons for nearly two hours. Even though most of us enjoyed the training, it seemed to be a relatively challenging experience for some.
The first figure we learnt to make was a sword. But, of course, before we could twist the balloon into shape we had to learn the basics, namely blowing up and closing the balloon in the right way. After some initial confusion and despite the rising level of lack of skills among some, everybody managed to make a toy sword. The next figure was a dog, followed by a swan, a flower and a heart with two lovers, until nearly the whole room was covered with shaped balloons in all possible colours.
When the lesson came to an end and those who were afraid of balloons sighed of relief, everybody took their balloons and distributed them to children on the street. The children absolutely loved the balloons and with big smiles on their faces they looked at the colourful figures as if they were the most valuable treasure they had ever seen in their lives. Thank you very much, Andreea, for teaching us these great skills that will definitely help us to cheer up children in hospitals!
