Think together training – Alcobendas 31 May – 5 june 2010

Between May 31 to June 5, 2010 I attended a seminar on building Alcobendas, Madrid called “Think together. What We Are = how WE act? “. There I had the pleasure to know people from Greece, Turkey, Latvia, Slovakia, Hungary, Italy, France, Czech Republic, Spain involved in Youth in Action Programme.

This intercultural experience gave us the opportunity to discover the beauty of Spanish culture starting with a foray into the heart of Madrid for a little taste of the vibrant atmosphere and culinary delights of the city, then continue trip to Alcobendas, near Madrid area, more withdrawn but as with many nationalities living who lived there.

Secondly, involvement in this project represented an opportunity to integrate Romania in large European family, a chance to be known Romanian culture abroad, the chance to show willingness to engage the Romans in European projects.

In this project, I discovered a cultural diversity in terms of lived experiences of each participant but also in terms of the opinions and continuing openness to novelty.

One of the positive aspects of the project cost in appreciation of cultural diversity, cooperation to achieve common ground and that is intercultural, finding a common language netinandu account the language barrier between all participants.

He fully deserved this experience!

VISUAL ARTS IN YOUTH WORK

Between 30.07-06.08. 2010 F. Nykoebing town of Denmark, was developed training “Visual Arts in Youth Work” project funded by the EU Youth in Action Programme. The purpose of this training was to present some modern techniques and attractive visual arts domain, which can be applied to youth organizations or even within schools.
Practically, few artists from Denmark, Sweden and Portugal have shown in the workshop that, with few tools available for painting, a digital camera or just a plastic sheet and duct tape, anyone can become a real artist in some hours.
Effect of participants’ work was impressive and they discover the possibility of fantasy or kept hidden emotions and feelings more or less time.
Team of Romania was formed on how unusual as it is homogeneous: Dan, Violeta, Adelina, and Oana-two generations, four totally different professions have participated with great dedication and created individually and all together a picture should enjoy many compatriots. The four are members of the organization A.C.T.O.R. Bucharest, headed by Eugen Barbu.
Romans participated alongside their colleagues from Estonia, Portugal, Wales and painting workshops guided by Ole Werner Munch, Ebbe Pettersson, Jasper and Grace Castro, four outstanding artists, both through their creations, and in what share as teachers.
Although the meeting was not an objective ompetitional, there has been no feedback and pleasant remarks received from these professionals, the more valuable team in Romania as a part has no “craft artist”, and other countries.
It was a special meeting with special memories with beautiful formation of human bonds of personal fulfillment and satisfaction that incite other plans for future actions.

A.C.T.O.R. is looking for volunteers

August 10, 2010

Name of the project: DIVERSITY
Duration of the project: 6 months
Number of places available : 4 places

Host/coordinating organization:
A.C.T.O.R.- Cultural Association for Theatre and Origami in Romania, EVS accreditation send/host/coordinating organization 2010-Ro-6

About…

The project has 2 main activities:
- presenting your culture to the children trough artistic activities and games in different kindergartens and schools in Bucharest
- clinic animation programs in three hospitals for children

Other activities can be about getting involved in A.C.T.O.R.’s internal events like campaigns, sessions to promote volunteering, the national origami contest.
Because it is a project about cultural diversity, we are looking for volunteers from one of these countries to complete our team of European volunteers which will bring their cultures closer to the Romanian children: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Sweden, United Kingdom

Working in kindergartens and schools

The volunteer will be in these institutions the ambassador of his/her culture. That’s why we would like to have volunteers from different countries from all over Europe in this project, so that the children will experience the diversity of European cultures.

The volunteers have to find creative ways of working with children so that they will learn by discovering while interacting with the world around them in a non-formal and motivating way.

Each volunteer will make a plan with educative games, stories, songs from their country, divided in 5 or 6 meetings.

Example of subjects for each meeting:

1. Observing the sounds of the volunteers language:
Simple funny nursery rhymes, songs with movements, presenting short cartoons/ movies in the volunteers language

2. Observing colors and shapes :
Traditional costumes, flags, national symbols
Collages
Role playing games
Introduction in the national legends

3. Observing the national rhytms and dances of the culture:
Dances
Coordonation and cooperation games
Playing the traditional music

4. Testing the national tastes and smells:
Presenting pictures with the national food
Bringing samples of the national food

5. Playing games from around the country of the volunteer:
Specific games in the volunteer’s country

6. Observing certain traditional events in the volunteer’s country:
Movies/ Photos
Realizing a mini event like the same as the original

The volunteers will have one meeting per week with each kindergarten/ school, so that in one week they will go to around 5 different kindergartens/ schools, deploying all kinds of artistic activities- painting, dancing, theatre or educative games.

Choosing the activities depends on the volunteer’s way of expressing themself and interacting with the kids the best. The children are divided in age groups and the method may depend on that.

These activities have to follow the values of the kindergartens and to open the children’s mind to the cultural diversity around them.

Through attractive, playful and interactive ways, the children should discover and understand themselves and the world around them better.
Also, having as teachers and friends interesting personalities from Europe will improve their communication skills and their trust in them.

Working in hospitals

The clinic animation program takes place in 3 different hospitals: 3 days per week, around 3 hours per day. The categories of children from the hospitals are with orthopedic problems or burned, from the oncology section or with lung problems. Some of them are also from poor families or from other social areas with problems.

Their treatment often requires a long period in the hospital, an unfriendly environment for the child.

The volunteers go in the hospital rooms and play with puppets, draw, read, make different creation workshops, make origami with the children, depending on what the condition of the child is and on the way the volunteer likes to express themself.

Sometimes only talking with the child in a friendly and optimistic way can improve their state.

Working with Romanian children

Working with children from 3 to 14 years old or from hospitals can be challenging sometimes, but seeing the progress they make after working with you can be very satisfying. If you are calm, patient, responsible, careful, but in the same time creative, funny, skillful, you are a good candidate for working with kids and you should use your potential. Also, you have to know how to make yourself to be listened to; because children are the most exigent audience…that could be another challenge for you!

Working in this project does not require professional abilities in any of its activities. Your participation is expected to take the abilities you have in this domain to the next level as it will be proved in your Youthpass.

The intercultural experience

Once you’re here, you will have the opportunity to discover the Romanian culture from inside. The children you will work with and the system they are in will be an important way to observe and to learn more about us.

You will also meet other Romanian young people, as well as other European volunteers hosted by A.C.T.O.R. and this could be a very valuable experience for you!

If you are interested in this project, please send a CV with a funny picture :) and a motivation letter to evs_actorromania@yahoo.com

Looking forward to hear from you!

Intercultural workshops here and there

July 14, 2010

A.C.T.O.R. (Cultural Association of Theater and Origami in Romania)
in co-operation with
the National Museum of Romanian History
and
Medieval Art

invite you on this Saturday at 10 AM to be a part of an intercultural educational workshop Aici-Acolo (Here and There).

Aici-Acolo workshop offers to the small participants a solid and fun interaction with the divere European cultures. Every child has one hour to visit Austria, Estonia, France, Germany, Spain and Ukraine while singing, dancing and playing games. After each visit they will get a funny visa in their Aici-Acolo passport, specially created for this event.

Given the fact that the workshop will be held in the medieval art hall of the National History Museum, the young volunteers from the countries listed above will offer entertaining activities and facts inspired by the history of their countries.

The charming hosts and leaders of the games are young EVS volunteers who are in Romania for one year with the projects Coloring Kids’ Life and Two Vitamins T (funded by Youth in Action – European Volunteer Service) and have organized similar workshops on the international puppet theater festival held in Tandarica theater in December and also in many schools and kindergartens in the districts of Bucharest, Ilfov, Calarasi, Giurgiu, Oltenita and Brasov to delight the children.

The New Wave

June 30, 2010

With the end of June the last month for half of the foreign volunteers in A.C.T.O.R. starts. The beginning of August will see leaving Ailie from Scotland, Chloé and Jordan from France, Jana from Germany and Merilyn from Estonia. Soon also the other volunteers who arrived last year will be leaving.

But Bucharest will see a new wave of EVS volunteers coming to start a new project, Aici-Acolo, a kind of mixture between Coloring Kids’ Life and Two Vitamins T from 2009/2010 period in A.C.T.O.R. For the new volunteers, the old ones are preparing a safer landing in Romanian culture.

There are trainings for clinic animation and work in schools and kindergartens planned, including introductive meetings between the volunteers and teachers before the schoolyear starts again. As well as funny but useful case problems to solve regarding the volunteer work or possible culture shocks.

With all that, A.C.T.O.R. is almost 100% ready to welcome the newcomers who will start to arrive from the beginning of August from all across Europe. We hope that both the new volunteers and the Romanians who they will be working with will enjoy the new project.

The Children’s Day lasted for days in A.C.T.O.R.

June 03, 2010

On this week, all over the world the international Day of Children was celebrated. For the children in Bucharest and A.C.T.O.R. volunteers, however, the celebrations started on the past weekend.

On Sunday, May the 30th, the volunteers occupied two parks to perform for and play with children there. In Parcul Copiilor Mélanie Préauchat from France and Merilyn Merisalu from Estonia performed for the children a number with dancing puppets from A.C.T.O.R.’s Trupa Imaginar show “The Travelling Suitcase”.

In Parcul Cismigiu, the organisation had its own stand where the previously named volunteers with Mariia Bogdana Kosarchyn from Ukraine, Jana Donis from Germany, Ailie Templeton from Scotland and the local Romanian volunteers made origami with children and also conducted a series of intercultural games for them which the children enjoyed immensely.

On the official Day of Children, the volunteers were to Oltenita, where they had a role to play in a party for all the local children in a Lebanese restaurant GEO. The children of Oltenita received two shadowtheater shows and facepaintings from the volunteers.

A.C.T.O.R. involved in the community

May 15, 2010

When on the past weekend A.C.T.O.R. volunteers performed an intercultural flagshow on the European day organised by the cultural house of Nicolae Balcescu in Parcul Carol, this weekend they are showing special shadow shows in the national museum of history.

As it is the White Night of museums all over the world, you can visit all the museums this Saturday night until the early hours of Sunday morning – for free. In the national museum of history situated in Calea Victoriei 12 you can also enjoy music, dance and theater on the side of pieces of history.

One part of the many things to see there are the shadow stories of young A.C.T.O.R. volunteers working in project Two Vitamins T (supported by Youth In Action European movement). Ghislain Bao Khanh Ngouansavanh, Jordan Marty and Mélanie Préauchat from France, Bogdana Mariia Kosarchyn from Ukraine and Merilyn Merisalu from Estonia will perform one shadow story on every full hour from 8 PM to midnight.

All these European volunteers work daily in social centers, schools, kindergartens and hospitals making clinic animation and theater. For the White Night of museums they have created special shadow stories to fit in with the space and purposes of the national museum of history. You are all very welcome to come and see what the stories are about!

A.C.T.O.R. helps children with annual flower campaign

March 27, 2010

Tomorrow will be the highlight of the annual A.C.T.O.R. Easter campaign where the Romanian and foreign volunteers will collect money for children in need by selling self-made paper-flowers.

In the beginning of spring every year former and current volunteers in A.C.T.O.R. and their friends will come together to prepare the flowers for the annual Easter campaign. We have workshops where the newcomers learn how to make roses out of napkins and where the old volunteers, who already know how to do this, also meet up with old and new friends.

All the benefit from the campaign will go for the children in three hospitals in Bucharest: Budimex, Grigore Alexandrescu and Lacul Bucura. A.C.T.O.R. will buy sweets, toys and other necessities for the children and give the presents to them on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

The highlight of the campaign this year is tomorrow, on Sunday before the Easter. You can find A.C.T.O.R. volunteers with red T-shirts and baskets of paper-flowers all over Bucharest, in front of churches, theaters, companies and schools, on the streets or in the parks selling flowers in hope to make the children in the hospitals smile.

You can help the fundraise for the children in need by buying flowers from the volunteers or making donations wherever you see youngsters wearing symbolics of A.C.T.O.R. The price of one flower is not fixed, you can give as much as you want or think the idea of helping children is worth.

Every year in addition to Romanian volunteers, also EVS volunteers from all over Europe will participate in the colourful campaign. This year we have youngsters from Austria, Estonia, France, Germany, Scotland, Spain and Ukraine with us. We also have help from other cities besides Bucharest. Also our friends from Codlea and Olteniţa have made and sold a lot of flowers in their homes.

Anybody who wants to help with the fundraise either financially or with toys can contact A.C.T.O.R. for more information.

Volunteers make shadow theater

February 9, 2010

European Volunteers in A.C.T.O.R. project Two Vitamins T, funded by Youth in Action and EVS, have proposed to bring to children in Bucharest and in rural areas that don’t have the chance to go often to the theater, creative shows that can be played in any space no matter how unconventional.

So they found it appropriate to express themselves with paper figures designed in the form of moving shadows, but with moments of clownery or different types of dolls.

The stories chosen are influenced by education and culture in which young people from France, Spain, Estonia and Ukraine live in. Children have the chance to have fun and learn at the same time, because in addition to enjoying the stories of volunteers, they can create their own moments of drama with characters in stories set or even with paper figures they themselves have made.

Using acting as a good means of communication, the volunteers can play these shows in groups between 15 and 50 children. Group size of children may differ on the basis of their age or diseases.

The Happy Cow
Felix Burgos Tena (Spain)
With paper and light enrolls a story about a brave farmer and his beloved cow – the happy Manuela. Manuela lives happily in the farm until something very extraordinary happens, that takes Manuela and the farmer closer to the stars than ever before. There is no problems that you can’t overcome if you believe in what you do and be brave.

The Fly Story
Jordan Marty (France)
Flies speak international bzz-bzz-bzz language, so there’s nothing unclear in this story. The story is about two flies who enjoy their life. And a man who doesn’t like the flies. There will be problems, but still a happy ending.
This story will make you laugh and gives some nice thoughts about  everyday life, what you usually don’t think about.

Sleeping Brat
Bao Ngouansavanh (France)
You know how little children sometimes don’t think about their parents or their own health? Well, sometimes things happen to make them understand who cares for them and how to take care about themselves. There will be some funny-looking monsters, but there will be also a loving mother. And a very nice moral.

Travel To Moon
Mélanie Préauchat (France)
A paperballoon can make all the difference. Especially when you are a small girl made of paper! There is a girl, there is her bed, there is a magical balloon and above the fluffy clouds there is the friendly moon. And they all meet in this lovely story and have a lot of fun. Maybe sometimes dreams can come true?

The Snowman
Merilyn Merisalu (Estonia)
From a nordic country there comes a nordic story – but it can also happen in the snowy Romania. Do you know, what can happen, when it snows a lot and the lovely snowflakes are not the only things falling from the sky? You will see a magical but still very usual thing that happens when there is snow and someone who enjoys it.

The Glovehouse
Maria Kosarchyn (Ukraine)
The snowy story continues here, making some animals very happy for some time. A man goes home and loses his glove, but it will not stay alone. Good things happen, but sometimes too much good can turn out to be not so good.
There will be new friendships created and old ones found again. And the glove will never stay alone.

Three Friends
Felix Burgos Tena (Spain)
Strange things happen. Especially when an old man, a small boy and a donkey go on a travel. Or maybe the things that you see and seem strange to you, aren’t really strange. If you see a man carrying a donkey, maybe there is no reason to laugh. Before judging people, you should know them and the story behind.

If the activities above seem interesting to you, we are waiting for your proposals what we could do together to the e-mail address: evs_actorromania@yahoo.com.

Vitamins to the countryside

January 31, 2010

From 14.-15. January, A.C.T.O.R. volunteering group Two Vitamins T was off in the mountains, bringing smiles outside from Bucharest to children in the district of Brasov.

Seven foreign volunteers with their group leader Stefanita Barbu were making a project “Making a Difference” concerning children in rural areas as Codlea and Bradet Those two days were filled with giving forum theater performances on democracy and presenting group’s own show “Trupa Imaginea”.

In Codlea, forum theater performances and discussion about democracy were done both in the school of art and crafts for youngsters with disabilities, and in the town’s cultural center for more active group of youngsters in the local community.

The show consisting of puppet and clownery numbers was a hit in the school of art and crafts in Codlea as well as in the special center for children with disabilities in Bradet, situated near Codlea.

In the school for art and crafts in Codlea, the volunteers also chose three pictures of democracy, whose authors will be given the chance to go to a youth exchange in Denmark.

Apart from the two-sided theater project, the volunteers were also in a german kindergarden, presenting seven countries in the European Union for the children. The kids were given small passports and they could travel to seven different countries to learn more about other cultures apart from Romania.

The trip to Codlea and Bradet was financed by Youth in Action and was the first part of a project concerning introducing democracy for children in the rural areas.

Puppets at the BOC

November 10, 2009

As we announced before, on Saturday, the 7th of November, the volunteers in «Coloring kids’ life» and «Two Vitamins T» projects, Felix Burgos Tena from Spain and Jordan Marty from France, conducted a theater-puppet construction workshop at Bucharest Origami Club (BOC).

Together with the children they made funny and expressive puppets out of polystyrene blocks and glued them a drawn face. The hands were made from rope. With bands of foam they made a different kind of puppets to which they attached an origami water-balloon as the head.

Meanwhile on the terrace of Café Lente, adults made modules for Golden Venture Origami. This was a good opportunity for them to know each other better and to integrate the newcomers on «Youth in Action» projects.

During the break, the violinist Daniel Mihai from Constanta made some exercises with the kids to test their sense of rhythm. The most talented children, who have faithfully reproduced the rhythm proposed by Daniel, received small sweets as prizes.

The children appreciated the puppets so much that they wanted, on their own initiative, to perform a show inspired by those they had seen a week before at the storigami workshop.

We are waiting for all of you again, on the next Saturday to do wonderful things for children as well as for adults.

Goodbye, InterCOOLtural House

November 7, 2009

The activities of the project InterCOOLtural House, financed through Action 2 of the program Youth in Action, took place for 6 months in partnership with Nicolae Balcescu Cultural Center in kindergartens, schools and high schools in Bucharest as well as in the 3 hospitals where A.C.T.O.R. develops its clinic animation programs.

Magdalena Kroczak from Poland,

Boba Baluchova from Slovakia,

Veronika Kobesova from Czech Republic

and Marta Bertagnolli from Italy

….each prepared an intercultural workshop, dedicated to the children and young people from different social categories in Bucharest. Besides this, the girls took part in A.C.T.O.R. campaigns, like the Easter Campaign, and also in origami workshops and other events of the organization.

THANK YOU FOR A GREAT PROJECT!

Once upon a time…

November 6, 2009

On Saturday, October 31st, there was a special event at the Bucharest Origami Club (BOC).

Text and photos by Irina Diana Calu

Volunteers from projects «Coloring kids’ life» and «Two Vitamins T» made a unique demonstration of Storigami.

Storigami is a technique that combines storytelling according to the steps you do to make an origami model. This is very beneficial, especially for children, stimulating their imagination, making it easier for them to remember the steps, increasing their attention and making associations – a fun and more efficient way of learning.

«Coloring kids’ life» and «Two Vitamins T» are two projects financed by the Youth in Action and European Voluntary Service (EVS).

The new volunteers who joined A.C.T.O.R. only a month ago, took acting very seriously and this Saturday, working in pairs, they imagined little plays around folding a tulip diagram.

As you can see the four teams turned out to be very creative and also…talented actors.

Under the guidance and attention of their coordinators Eugenia and Stefanita Barbu, the A.C.T.O.R. volunteers created a fairytale atmosphere that enchanted the kids and the adults in the audience.

Merilyn Merisalu (Estonia) & Felix Burgos Tena (Spania)

told a beautiful and romantic story, about a prince and his princess in search of the perfect love.

Ghislain Bao Khanh Ngouansavanh (Franta) & Sarah Gebel (Germania)

imagined a story about a two playground friends, a girl and a boy who grow up to be a beautiful family that rediscovered the joy of playing due to their twins.

Chloe Violleau (Franta) & Jana Donis (Germania)

The third story was about a cute little monster that wanted to sleep and a big mean shark. But everything turned out well in this story – it ends with a flower.

Melanie Preauchat & Jordan Marty (Franta)

The last and also the most appreciated story due to its subject: the relationship between parents and children, as well as for the remarkable interpretation of the two protagonists that managed to capture the little ones! This last team won the kids’ trophy, origami figurines made with patience by themselves.

ATTENTION!

Next Saturday, November 7, the children have a great opportunity to take part from a theater-puppet construction workshop. Felix Burgos Tena from Spain will conduct the special intercultural workshop. As for the adults, they can make modules for Golden Venture Origami, a technique similar to Lego. We are waiting for you!

Solution: PUPPETRY!

October 22, 2009

A.C.T.O.R. is looking for partners for the training course – Action 4.3

What? Solution: PUPPETRY!!
Where? Codlea, Romania (near Bran Castle – Dracula’s Castle)
When? 20-26.03.2010

About:
A.C.T.O.R. is working with puppetry for youngsters as a nonformal education tool since 2002. It is always a great activity to create performances with different kinds of objects, expressing ideas and feelings. Puppetry could be the perfect language in intercultural projects, too, because in the world of puppetry, the word “impossible” doesn’t exist. It is cool to have no limits creating characters about our world and speaking freely about difficult problems with the puppet’s mouth.

Who is invited?
This training proposes to all open minded youthworkers to start to use every day puppet-projects with their group of youngsters. Also if you are 18 years old and puppetry inspires you – you are welcome in Codlea as a participant in this TC!

Financial aspects:
The participants will cover 30% of the travel expenses.
The grant will cover the rest: accommodation, food, training activities.

What to do to become a partner?
Send us a message about what is or what could be puppetry for you and your organization.
Send part 3 with signature and stamp before 29. of October to actor_romania@yahoo.com

Who was there?
Livia Rus – a wonderful group leader and helping-hand for the organizers
Ioana Mitrea – an artist and a photographer, with artistically amazing technique
Ana-Maria Radu – the creator of the fantastic heroes Maximus, Dacicus, Cheezee-da-Maus and, obviously, of Cop-CAT
Ionut Gabriel Radu – representing with pride the masculine side of the project, anti-war fighter and master of Chicken-Earth-Defender
Anca Rusu – nicknamed Little Manga – I wonder why is that? :)
Emiliana Rastau – the black-cat of ComixStarAlive night and master of wet-brush technique
All of them representing with pride ACTOR and Romania.

Who else was there?
Very nice and happy people from Portugal, Greece, Poland, Italy, Slovakia, France, and, of course, Germany.

But why did it happen?
Because some young people thought that Comics have a sweet good taste no matter the age, if you just put in it some good humour and a little irony. This is especially useful when trying to deal with serious problems, like young people’s integration in the contemporary society, intercultural stereotypes, peace and war, love or the fact to be different from the others around you.
Also, it happened because the same young people wanted to learn how to make a good Comic-book.

What is all this supposed to mean?
We saw/discussed/debated/presented our opinions about comics, animations and treet art, relying on our personal background, on our nationality, on the things that make us different or similar. Then we imagined and created together a book with short comic tales, each of them conceived through the collaboration of our brains, hearts and hands.

For more details, please check A.C.T.O.R. library, where you will find this wonderful creation of ours. (If you still don’t understand what this is all about, don’t despair! Ask for a personal explanation from one (or more) of the persons involved in the project. Together, while drinking a beer in a relaxed atmosphere, everything will become clear.)
